📋 FAQ

How does entry-level pricing work?

Most web hosting companies in the market offer what’s called “entry-level” pricing or “promo” pricing.

What it means is that you’re going to get charged at 50% or even 80% off for the initial pay period. That initial period can last anything from one year up to three years.

After that, you’ll have to renew at the regular price. This naturally means a significant spike in the cost.

This is an industry-accepted practice. Sorry. 🤷‍♂️

Do I get a domain name as well?

Some web hosting companies offer a free domain name for the first year. Some do not. It’s very uncommon to find offers for free domains for longer than one year.

After that first year, you’ll have to pay for your domain around $15 annually to keep the site live.

How does unmetered / unlimited bandwidth or disk space work?

Many web hosting companies offer what they call unmetered or unlimited bandwidth and/or disk space.

What this actually means is that they won’t keep track of the server resources you’re using up as long as that usage is “within the expected volume.” That expected volume is different from company to company.

The key piece of information here is that those “unmetered” or “unlimited” plans aren’t actually unlimited.

What is WordPress hosting?

WordPress hosting is a term you’ll find often used by some of the hosting companies.

WordPress hosting is a type of web hosting setup that’s been optimized to work with the WordPress software.

What else do I need before I can launch a site?

A web hosting setup is a mandatory first step. Apart from that, you also need a domain name, and a CMS – a website operating system – to build your website with.

We cover that more in-depth in these guides:

🤔 Compare web hosting services and decide what you need

As I said at the beginning, choosing the right web host for your new site might not be the easiest of things, but it’s certainly doable! I hope the “web hosting comparison chart” approach that we went for in this post has been helpful.

And, perhaps something worth remembering is that you’re not stuck with your host indefinitely – you can always switch if your original choice hasn’t panned out for some reason. Most web hosts offer free website migration anyway these days.

If you’re just about to start working on your website, consider giving these a read:
